Dr. Jessica Ailani, MD is a board-certified neurologist and a UCNS accredited headache specialist.  Dr. Ailani is an associate professor of neurology and the director of the MedStar Georgetown Headache Center atMedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

Her specific interests in headache involve procedures in headache medicine.  She has an active role in the American Headache Society serving on the Executive Board as a member-at-large, serves on a variety of committees, and is the outgoing section chair of the procedures in headache medicine special interest group.  At Georgetown, she’s involved in teaching residents and medical students about headaches in order to increase awareness about migraine and associated disorders.

Joan Bardsley

Joan Bardsley, MBA, RN, CDE, FAADE

Joan Bardsley, MBA, RN, CDE, FAADE serves as assistant vice president of nursing and research integration for MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI) and MedStar Corporate Nursing.   She has over 40 years experience in healthcare with a specialty in diabetes self-management education.  At MRHI, she is a member of the executive committee, providing oversight for special projects, and is the institutional official for the animal facility.  Ms Bardsley is currently co-investigator for the NIH supported inpatient diabetes education project, Diabetes-to-Go and is a contributor to the AHRQ funded grant, We Want to Know.  The latter initiative has become a key support component of the MedStar Health Interdisciplinary Model of Care effort. Prior to her role, Ms. Bardsley was responsible for core scientific services and scientific centers administration at MHRI.

At corporate nursing, Ms. Bardsley directly supports the Nursing Collaborative Governance Councils.  She is the executive liaison for the Nursing Research Council and the Advanced Practice Registered Nursing Council.  Ms. Bardsley serves as the executive liaison for Team Green in the Nursing Leadership Development Program.

Ms Bardsley has published articles and book chapters on diabetes self-management and is an invited speaker both nationally and internationally on this topic.  She served as the President of the American Association of Diabetes Educators in 2014 and remains an active member in this organization.  Ms. Bardsley is the current chair of the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators and is a board member of the Children with Diabetes organization.  She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Boston College and a Masters in Business Administration degree from George Washington University.

Bruce A. Bartoo CFRE

Bruce A. Bartoo, CFRE is senior vice president of Philanthropy for MedStar Health. He also serves as MedStar’s chief philanthropy officer with a team of 48 associates.

Prior to joining MedStar, Bruce was chief philanthropy officer and president of the Mercy Health Foundation at Sisters of Mercy Health System, a 28 hospital Catholic system based in St. Louis. Earlier he served as executive director of foundations with ProMedica Health System in northwest Ohio and vice president of development for Greater Baltimore Medical Center. His career began as a political campaign executive and fundraiser, and he later worked in advancement at Westminster College in Pennsylvania and Drake University in Iowa.

Bruce is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE), has a Master of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He has also served as a conference chair, regional director, and board member at the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), and on several regional boards for the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

Josh Billings

Josh Billings is the regional director of seven MedStar National Rehabilitation Network clinics in Anne Arundel County and South Baltimore. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Susquehanna University in 1995 and his Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from University of Delaware in 1997. Billings was a middle-distance runner in college and started the first running injury clinic in the Baltimore area. Billings is especially passionate about working with youth athletes and making positive changes in youth sports programming through education and in his role as community outreach lead in MedStar’s Youth Sports Medicine program.

S. Orion Courtin, MD, MHS is a physician who specializes in the care of older people (geriatrician) at the Center for Successful Aging at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. Dr. Courtin completed his residency training in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at Johns Hopkins. He has been a proud Baltimorean since 2004, having completed a degree in public health at The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and his medical education at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He worked for Maryland’s Medicaid program as a policy analyst and assisted in the development of the Money Follows the Person Program, a program to help adults living in nursing facilities transition back to their homes in the community. Elias K. Shaya, MD, serves as the MedStar North Regional Medical Director and Senior Associate Executive Director for Behavioral Health Services at MedStar Health, the largest healthcare system in the Baltimore-Washington region. He is also a Past President and Council Chair of the Maryland Psychiatric Society. In addition to his administrative and leadership responsibilities, he maintains an active clinical practice, specializing in geriatric psychiatry, dementia, and mood disorders. He holds part-time faculty appointments in Radiology and Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University and in Health Sciences at the George Washington University.

Dr. Shaya, one of the first clinicians in the country to receive dual training in psychiatry and nuclear medicine, has experience using functional brain imaging technologies to study neuropsychiatric disorders. His other research and interests include geriatric and neuropsychiatry, mood disorders, as well as electronic health records and innovations in care delivery, clinical documentation, CPT coding, and payment models. His work has been published in journals such as Neuropsychopharmacology, The American Journal of Psychiatry, and The Journal of Neurochemistry, and he is a contributing author of the book The Everything Health Guide to Schizophrenia: The latest information on treatment, medication, and coping strategies.
